American Medical Association Changes Official Position on Medical Cannabis PDF Print E-mail

In a long awaited move the nations largest doctors organization, the American Medical Association, has decided to call on Congress to review the scheduling of cannabis.

The AMA had previously had an official policy of retaining cannabis as a schedule one narcotic, however, as of their meeting in Houston in early November of 2009 they have formally changed that position and are now calling on the federal government to reconsider the scheduling of cannabis.  Although, they directly stated that this should not be seen as an endorsement of states' medical cannabis programs, it is a step in the right direction and now puts pressure on the feds to examine cannabis as a schedule one drug.  Schedule one drugs are the only drugs that doctors cannot prescribe.
