Medication Overuse Headaches Continue PDF Print E-mail

While the number of cases of medication overuse headaches (MOH) have remained fairly steady over the past decade, a new study finds that the medications most commonly linked to MOH are changing.

According to Princeton University researchers, overuse of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is rising as a cause of MOH, while overuse of opioid and ergotamine drugs is declining. Researchers also noted that overuse of anti-headache medications, painkillers and a new class of drugs known as triptans, have also been associated with MOH risk. Overall, MOH are estimated to account for 59% of all acute
headache diagnoses, slightly down from 64% in 1990.
