Iowa: Patients Speak Out for Legal Access PDF Print E-mail

Afflicted with a rare and painful neurological disorder, George McMahon has been receiving free cannabis directly from the federal government since 1990. The investigational new drug program that he's a part of was suspended once AIDS patients began applying to it in large numbers. This week he was working with other patients in Iowa to get a state measure passed there that would provide some protection, though not the complete protection he and a handful of other IND patients enjoy.

Des Moines, IA: Central Iowans fighting to legalize cannabis spoke out in Des Moines on Saturday. Their goal was to educate the public on why medical cannabis should be legal in Iowa. The crowd at the State Historical Building wasn't big, but everyone there felt passionately about the cause.

George McMahon was one of the speakers. He says he's one of only five people in the U.S. that receives medical marijuana from the federal government.

He says without it, he'd be dead.

"The pain instantly goes away," McMahon said.  "The spasms quit within ten seconds and all the symptoms go to where they are manageable by me."
