Known side effects from taking antidepressant medications include weight gain, sexual dysfunction, sleep irregularities, and even heightened suicide risk. To that list, new research is adding another troubling prospect: increased risk of violent outbursts.
According to a study published in the Public Library of Science-Medicine, taking the antidepressant Paxil can significantly raise a person's risk of having "hostility events." Researchers at Great Britain's Cardiff University studied more than 15,000 patients who had been prescribed either Paxil or a placebo pill. Those patients on Paxil were more than twice as likely to experience violent outbursts as those in the placebo group, researchers found. What This Means for You - After several high-profile incidents of suicide among young Paxil users, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration required stronger warning labels on the medication in 2004. Paxil is part of a class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Ask your doctor about the differing side effects of SSRIs and which may be right for you.
