Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are coming together to call for better funding of substance abuse and addiction recovery treatment. At a recent Capitol Hill press conference, House members Patrick Kennedy (D - RI) and Jim Ramstad (R - MN) announced the introduction of a major new bill that would require insurance companies to cover treatment for addiction.
While the bill has met significant opposition from insurance industry advocates, supporters have expressed their determination to widen the public debate surrounding substance abuse. Both Kennedy and Ramstad have been the subjects of well-publicized struggles with prescription medicine and alcohol addictions, respectively. What This Means for You - Better funding for addiction medicine research and treatment is desperately needed, to be sure. But if you or someone you love struggles with a substance abuse problem, there's no better time than now to confront this life-threatening issue.
