Washington, D.C.- On Monday, September 22, medical marijuana supporters from around the country will gather in D.C. to hear patient testimony in honor of deceased activist, Cheryl Miller. Waukegan, Illinois glaucoma patient Brenda Kratovil is among those to address the audience at the U.S. Supreme Court. Patients and supporters will also participate in a candlelight vigil. On Tuesday, September 23, there will be a press conference at the Rayburn House Office Building at 10:30 AM, and patients and supporters will lobby House congressional offices.

Kratovil, suffering from lattice corneal dystrophy, glaucoma, and multiple sclerosis, was arrested in 2001 and charged with possession of cannabis. For years Brenda used eye drops to control the pressure and pain of glaucoma, but now cannabis is the only treatment that works. In June of this year, a Lake County judge ruled that marijuana was not a medical necessity for Brenda. On June 23, Kratovil plead guilty to a Class 3 felony marijuana possession, with the stipulation that she could appeal her conviction based on her medical necessity.

For two days, Cheryl Miller's family and friends will join with medical marijuana supporters to memorialize her life and contributions to the medical marijuana movement. Though she was paralyzed by decades of multiple sclerosis, Cheryl and her husband Jim fought to make marijuana available for patients. Cheryl's long struggle came to an end on June 7, 2003.
