May 31, 2009: We now have until January to get the 60 votes that we need because they've recessed until then. The bill is not dead though, it will start off exactly where it left off when they return. Hopefully we can get a favorable vote in the House now that the Senate has approved this measure and then send it over to Gov. Quinn's desk. Keep making phone calls and sending emails to State Representatives http://www.ilga.gov/house/ and the Governor http://www.illinois.gov/GOV/
Senate Bill 1381 is the farthest that a medical cannabis bill has made it in the legislative process in Illinois and we need to use this momentum to get the bill through the House chamber. Please contact your State Representative and the Governor at 217-782-2000 and urge them to "Vote YES on Senate Bill 1381."
May 28, 2009: SB 1381 just passed out of the House Human Services Committee!! It seems that the bill is on the fast track to get a vote sometime between now and Sunday on the floor of the House. People are mobilizing to go to Springfield between now and then to give it one last push. SB 1381 just passed the Senate floor vote 30-28 on May 27th, and then on the 28th it was again voted through the House Human Services Committee. It now awaits a full House chamber vote. May 27, 2009: Senate Bill 1381 Passes the Senate & House Human Services Committee, now awaits House floor votes The Illinois Senate just voted favorably on the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act , Senate Bill 1381! The vote count was 30 in favor, 28 opposed and one voting present. The bill will now be sent to the Illinois House of Representatives where it will be assigned to a committee and voted on there.
The bill's sponsor, Senator Haine, did state during the floor debate that he would be willing to tighten the bill up further in order to get it through that chamber. He is adamant about getting this legislation passed and ensuring a program that will be effective yet controlled.

House Bill 2514, the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act was introduced by Representatives Lang (D-16) and Saviano (R-77). Plus, State Representatives Yarbrough (D-7) and Soto (D-4) have added their sponsorship to HB 2514. Senate Bill 1381, also titled the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act has been assigned to the Senate Public Health Committee. The Senate bill was introduced by Senator Haine, a former State's Attorney and has been working with law enforcement to ease their concerns and hopefully get them to take a neutral stance on the bill as opposed to actively lobbying against it. State Senator Martinez (D-20) has also sponsored SB 1381.
It is crucial that our legislators know how much support these two bills have. Please take a few moments today to contact your elected officials and urge them to VOTE YES on these bills and cosponsor them. http://capwiz.com/norml2/issues/alert/?alertid=12671296 HB 2514: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=2514&GAID=10&GA=96&DocTypeID=HB&LegID=44766&SessionID=76 SB 1381: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=1381&GAID=10&GA=96&DocTypeID=SB&LegID=42617&SessionID=76 |
